In writing your response to the policy question, you depart from the traditional law school exam writing approach (see the following section, “Writing the essay answer”). Instead, try writing it the way you’d respond to a college essay. Concentrate on making as many points as possible and tying different aspects of your course together. Organization is key; sketching out a rough mini-outline of the points you’d like to make is always a good bet.

Policy questions are usually the last question on a three-question test. That usually means you’ll be down to the wire by the time you get to it. (I always ended up spending more time on the fact patterns, because they were usually the first and second questions on the exam, and I just did the questions in order.) If you’re only halfway through your response to the policy question and you realize there’s only 10 minutes left in the exam, sketch out your remaining points in outline form. That way, you’ll at least get some partial credit.
